First Aid Training for Large Organisations FAQs
The number of trained first aiders your large organisation needs will depend on your workplace risk level and the specific risks identified in your organisation’s first aid needs assessment. You should also follow guidance outlined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE):
Fewer than 5 employees: At least one appointed person to take charge of first-aid arrangements.
5 to 50 employees: At least one first aider trained in either Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or full First Aid at Work (FAW), based on your workplace risk level.
More than 50 employees: At least one FAW-trained first aider for every 50 or 100 employees, depending on risk level.
This guidance suggests that a large high-risk organisation with 1000 employees would require a minimum of 20 FAW-trained first aiders, with additional trained staff likely required to ensure coverage across sickness absences, holidays and shift patterns.
However, every workplace is unique, and every organisation should always complete a risk assessment to determine how many first aid trained employees are required based on your workplace’s risks and hazards.

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a 1-day course that covers essential emergency skills and is suitable for lower-risk environments. First Aid at Work (FAW) is a more comprehensive 3-day course, recommended for higher-risk environments, such as food production facilities or large organisations.
