James Thornby

Lead Instructor
I have been part of First Aid Safety for 3 years, but my journey in first aid began much earlier while working in the leisure industry. Safety and well-being were a big part of daily life as a pool lifeguard, and I quickly realised how important it was to have the right knowledge and confidence to act in an emergency. This experience inspired me to train as a first aid instructor and start delivering courses in 2017 - my goal was to help others feel capable of making a difference when it really matters.

With over 8 years of practical first aid training experience, I deliver adult and paediatric first aid courses, defibrillator training, Emergency First Responder sessions and introductory mental health courses. My focus is always on ensuring learners feel prepared and confident to handle real-life situations.

I love the variety that my role offers. Every group is different, from parents wanting to protect their children to professionals needing workplace certification. Hearing their stories and tailoring each course to the most relevant real-life situations keeps every course meaningful and engaging.

There are several humorous stories from the courses I teach, but my most profound memory has to be helping a learner on a course who was suffering from a suspected heart attack. I stayed calm, called for an ambulance and moved the person into a comfortable position, with their knees bent and their heads and shoulders supported. Thankfully, the individual recovered, which reinforced the importance of practical first aid knowledge and swift action.

I hope every learner leaves my courses understanding that first aid isn’t just a workplace tick-box exercise, it’s a genuine life skill that empowers them to protect their colleagues and loved ones.

Outside of work, I enjoy visiting Spain frequently and love spending time doing activities that keep me active and connected with others, whether that’s going for a run or long walks.
