“I used First Aid Safety in my previous employment and knew how good the service and learner feedback had been, so I was happy to be involved in bringing them into Taiko.

First Aid Training for The Food and Drink Industry FAQs

Yes, food manufacturing businesses are legally required to provide adequate first aid provision for their staff, which typically includes first aid trained staff.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the number of trained staff should be identified by a workplace risk assessment.

As food manufacturing is typically classified as a high-risk working environment, guidance suggests at least one fully trained First Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) trained person for every 50 employees.

Food manufacturing staff typically require the 3-day First Aid at Work (FAW) training due to the high-risk working environment they operate in.

The number of staff and the level of training required should ultimately be based on your business’s first aid needs assessment. This needs assessment should consider machinery and chemical hazards, and workforce size to determine the most appropriate level of first aid provision.

Food production facilities are typically classified as high-risk based on your workplace risk assessment. The guidance outlined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) depends on the size of your workforce.

Fewer than 5 employees:

At least one appointed person to take charge of first-aid arrangements.

5 to 50 employees:

At least one first aider trained in either Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or full First Aid at Work (FAW), based on your specific workplace risks.

More than 50 employees:

At least one FAW-trained first aider for every 50 employees (or part thereof)

Food manufacturing business should always complete a risk assessment to determine the number of first aid trained employees that are required based on your workplace’s unique risks and hazards.

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a 1-day course covering essential emergency skills, suitable for lower-risk food production environments or office-based staff. First Aid at Work (FAW) is a comprehensive 3-day course, recommended for higher-risk environments such as food production facilities with machinery, manual handling and other significant hazards.

Read our article for a detailed guide on the differences between the 1-day and 3-day first aid courses

While the 1-day Emergency First Aid at Work course can be suitable for some working areas of food manufacturing, i.e. office staff, typically most food production sites opt for the 3-day First Aid at Work (FAW) course because they are classified as high-risk workplaces.
