Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid FAQs

Emergency Paediatric First Aid training should be renewed every three years to ensure that the qualification remains valid and the knowledge and skills stay up to date. It is also strongly recommended to take refresher training annually or as close to that as possible, to keep confidence high and ensure practitioners are familiar with the latest guidelines and practices.

The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course is a one-day programme that focuses on the most critical emergencies involving children, such as CPR, choking, and managing wounds or bleeding. However, the full Paediatric First Aid course lasts two days and covers a wider range of serious incidents, including issues like head injuries, burns, major illnesses, and fractures, providing more depth. Only the full Paediatric First Aid course meets EYFS requirements and is therefore suitable for meeting regulatory requirements for Ofsted-registered settings.

The following illnesses, injuries and conditions are NOT included in the shorter Emergency Paediatric First Aid course

Injuries to bones, muscles and joints

No, previous first aid experience is not required. The course is structured to accommodate learners of varying levels of experience, including complete beginners, guiding everyone through the essential skills and knowledge needed to perform emergency paediatric first aid.

There’s no specialist equipment that learners are required to bring. However, you should wear comfortable clothing that allows for movement since there are practical exercises, including lying on the floor for CPR and other hands-on components. Also, bring a notepad and pen so you can take notes during the theory parts, and anything else the organiser may specify before the course.

The Equality Act 2010 requires training centres to make reasonable adjustments where a disabled person would be at a substantial disadvantage in undertaking an assessment. A request for a reasonable adjustment depends on several factors, including the needs of the individual. Reasonable adjustments should be applied before a learner is assessed. Accordingly, we ask that customers identify any reasonable adjustments in time for such adjustments to be made safely.

Learners must be at least 14 years old* to enrol on the Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid course. An understanding of English is also required to undertake the training and complete the multiple-choice assessments. Learners must demonstrate first aid procedures as part of their assessment, including providing CPR to a casualty on the floor, and so must be physically capable of this.

*Please note that while learners aged 14-16 are allowed to complete the qualification, they shouldn’t be relied on by employers as the sole emergency first aider in the workplace.
