Assessment Method
Practical assessment
A practical assessment of the learners is conducted during the course. Ongoing assessment will involve learners demonstrating skills in primary survey, CPR, AED (Defibrillator) and choking for adults and children.
You’ll be assessed on your ability to:
Perform competent CPR.
Use an AED safely.
Respond effectively to someone choking.
Correctly manage an unconscious casualty.
There’s no written exam, so learners are assessed on their practical competence.

It’s good practice to refresh your first aid training annually and keep up-to-date with any changes. This refresher course is strongly recommended by the HSE.
While it’s not mandatory by law, the HSE strongly recommends an annual refresher for first aiders to keep their skills sharp and compliant with workplace safety standards.
A refresher course is suitable for maintaining skills annually within a three-year certification period. Approching three years to your first aid certificate expiring, a requalification course is required to renew your certificate. Once certificates have expired, the first aider is no longer considered to be competent to act as a workplace first aider.
