Emergency First Aid at Work Level 3 FAQs

The 1-Day Emergency First Aid at Work is a one-day course covering core first aid skills designed for lower-risk workplaces, such as CPR, treating minor injuries and managing an unconscious casualty. The Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work course is a comprehensive three-day qualification that includes major illnesses and injuries and is aimed at high-risk environments. In addition to the skills taught in the EFAW course, it also covers serious medical conditions, burns, poisoning and anaphylaxis.

If your workplace is categorised as high-risk, according to your workplace risk assessment, it’s recommended that you have at least one fully competent first aid who has completed an Ofqual-regulated 3-Day First Aid at Work course. According to HSE guidance, the more in-depth 3-day course is recommended for workplaces with a higher potential for serious injury or illness. For more information on the differences between the 1-day and 3-day first aid courses, read our in-depth guide to the differences

The Emergency First Aid at Work course may be sufficient for your workplace if it is low risk, such as a shop or office, has a smaller number of employees, and the work involves no significant hazards. However, you should conduct a comprehensive first aid needs assessment to assess which type of First Aid at Work training will be required for your business. Speak to our team if you’re unsure about what level of training is right for your organisation.

The number of emergency first aiders your workplace requires will depend on its size, the hazards present and the type of work you undertake. The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide “adequate and appropriate” first-aid equipment, facilities and personnel. The HSE recommends that businesses conduct a first aid needs assessment to determine how many first aiders are required and the level of training they need.

Your first aid needs assessment should include:

the size of your workforce
the type of work you do
hazards and how likely they are to cause harm
work patterns
availability of first aiders and appointed persons
history of workplace accidents

For smaller low-risk workplaces, one first aider who has completed this Emergency First Aid at Work course might be sufficient, but for larger organisations, multiple trained first aiders will likely be required, some of whom should have undertaken the more comprehensive

Up to 12 learners can be facilitated per instructor, ensuring each learner receives personalised instructions and hands-on training. Larger group numbers can also be facilitated with additional instructors. Get in touch with our team today to learn more about our in-house Emergency First Aid at Work training

Yes, the course meets the requirements set by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for workplace first aid training. The course helps companies meet their legal obligations under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations of 1981, ensuring adequately trained first-aiders in the workplace.

By invesiting in the Emergnecy First Aid at Work training for your employees, you meet the HSE requirement to provide appropriate first aid provision. Successful learners will receive a nationally recognised qualification that’s regulated by Ofqual

No prior first aid experience is necessary as the course is designed for learners from various training levels and experiences, including those with very little or no previous first aid experience. This 1 Day Emergency First Aid at Work course will provide learners with the skills they need to manage the common first aid emergencies in the workplace, including both practical skills and theoretical knowledge

Yes, because our Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work course is delivered in-house, it can be fully tailored to suit your company’s specific risks and requirements. Our in-house approach ensures that the training is relevant to your team’s daily working environment, and they are trained on any risks that are unique to your workplace.

If a learner doesn’t pass the Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work course the first time, they’ll always have the option to resit. Learners have the option to re-take the theory assessment using an alternative test paper within 4 weeks of the course end date. Additional support is provided to assist the learner/s and improve their chances of successfully completing the retake.

Proof of photo identification is required to attend all regulated courses. Otherwise, there’s no specialist equipment that you need to provide - everything that’s required will be facilitated by our instructors. Learners are advised to wear comfortable clothing suitable for practical exercises and bring a notepad and pen for taking notes.

The Equality Act 2010 requires training centres to make reasonable adjustments where a disabled person would be at a substantial disadvantage in undertaking an assessment. A request for a reasonable adjustment depends on several factors, including the needs of the individual. Reasonable adjustments should be applied before a learner is assessed. Accordingly, we ask that customers identify any reasonable adjustments in time for such adjustments to be made promptly.

Learners must be at least 14 years old* to enrol on the Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work course. An understanding of English is also required to undertake the training and complete the multiple-choice assessments. Learners must demonstrate first aid procedures as part of their assessment, including providing CPR to a casualty on the floor, and so must be physically capable of this. Where learners are unable to perform practical tasks such as this, they may choose to take the QNUK Level 2 Award in Essential First Aid (RQF) course as an alternative.

*Please note that while learners aged 14-16 are allowed to complete the qualification, they shouldn’t be relied on by employers as the sole emergency first aider in the workplace.
