What you’ll learn in paediatric first aid training

Our courses teach practical skills that are easy to understand and crucial in emergencies:

Child and Baby First Aid Basics

Gain confidence in handling common injuries such as cuts, bruises, burns, and fractures. You’ll learn how to treat minor wounds to prevent infections to administer child CPR using the correct protocols.

CPR Training for Infants and Children

Paediatric CPR is different from adult CPR and requires specific techniques. You’ll learn the proper method for performing 30 chest compressions and rescue breaths on infants and children, making sure you’re prepared in the event of an emergency.

Opening the Airway and Rescue Breathing

In cases where breathing is impaired, you’ll practice techniques such as the “chin lift” to open the airway and understand how to perform rescue breathing by covering both the mouth and nose in infants. Knowing how to open and maintain the airway correctly can improve rescue breaths given to a child.

Choking Relief for Infants and Children

Choking can be particularly dangerous for infants and children. In our courses, you’ll practice back blows and chest thrusts specifically designed for babies, which are essential to know if an object becomes lodged in the airway.

Recognising Serious Conditions

Learn to recognise signs of serious conditions like allergic reactions, asthma, and shock, so you know when to call 911 or seek further emergency medical help. We cover the importance of acting swiftly and how to gauge a child’s responsiveness in situations that might not immediately appear as emergencies.

First Aid Kit Essentials

Understanding what to keep in your first aid kit is vital. You’ll become familiar with essential items, from bandages to plasters, and learn how to use each one effectively. Having an aid kit on hand, whether at home or in a childcare setting, ensures you’re always prepared.

 Paediatric first aid training FAQs

Paediatric first aid training is ideal for anyone responsible for the safety and well-being of babies or young children. This includes parents, grandparents, babysitters, childminders, nursery staff, teachers, sports coaches and after-school club leaders. Even if you don’t work in childcare, these courses provide valuable life skills that everyone can use to keep children safe.

The one-day paediatric first aid course provides essential skills for handling the most common emergencies involving children and infants. It covers CPR, choking, minor injuries, recovery position, and managing breathing difficulties. This course is suitable for parents, caregivers, and childcare environments where Ofsted compliance isn’t required.

However, the two-day paediatric first aid cdourse offers a much deeper level of training. It includes everything from the one-day course plus additional modules such as managing severe asthma attacks, anaphylaxis, fractures, head and spinal injuries, burns, seizures and long-term medical conditions. This course meets Ofsted and EYFS requirements, making it essential for nurseries, early years settings, and other childcare settings that are on the OFSTED compulsory register.
