Course Description
Working with babies or children? Learn how to correctly manage a choking baby or a child, recognise symptoms for major childhood illnesses, and become proficient in providing effective first aid on paediatric casualties. Designed for learners on the OFSTED compulsory register, working in early years setting in Nurseries and Montessori schools.

What Will You Learn? The aim is for the learners to demonstrate improved confidence to effectively respond to a paediatric first aid emergency such as choking to minimise a situation becoming worse.
Unit 1 – Emergency Paediatric First Aid
Roles and Responsibilities of a Paediatric First Aider
How to assess emergency incidents and ensure safety
Administering CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and positioning children and babies in recovery positions
Management of unresponsive infants or children, whether they are breathing or not
Treatment for choking, a common emergency in young children
Dealing with wounds and bleeds, shock, and other life-threatening conditions
Immediate action for bites, stings, and other external threats
Unit 2 – Managing Paediatric Injuries, Illness and Emergencies
This unit focuses on advanced first-aid scenarios, preparing participants for a wide range of illnesses and injuries that may affect children:
Handling injuries to bones, muscles, and joints, such as fractures and dislocations.
Managing head, spinal, and chest injuries.
Recognising and treating chronic medical conditions in children, including asthma, diabetes, and meningitis.
Providing first aid for burns, scalds, and eye injuries.
Dealing with anaphylaxis and other severe allergic reactions.
Understanding and treating fevers and febrile convulsions.
First aid for minor injuries like cuts, grazes, splinters, and bruises.
Assessment Method
Practical assessment
A practical assessment of the learners is conducted during the course. Ongoing assessment will involve learners demonstrating paediatric first aid skills in primary survey, CPR, AED (Defibrillator), recovery position, choking, head-to-toe survey, application of various slings, administering first aid to a child with suspected spinal injury, demonstrating the use of an EpiPen and identifying life-threatening bleeds.
Theory assessment (multiple-choice question paper)
Learners are assessed by completing a multiple-choice question paper near the end of the course consisting of:

28 correct answers pass mark
60-minute time limit

Paediatric First Aid FAQs
The Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid is a one-day course covering core first aid emergencies in paediatric situations including CPR, choking, and managing wounds and bleeds. A full Paediatric First Aid course is 2 days in duration and also covers serious first aid incidents such as head injuries, fractures, burns, and major illnesses.
Yes, this course is fully compliant with the Ofsted requirements for early years and childcare settings, making it an excellent choice for those working in nurseries, schools, and other child-focused workplaces.
In-house training is designed to meet the needs of your workplace and can easily be customised to your working environment.
Up to 12 learners can be facilitated per instructor, ensuring each learner receives personalised instructions and hands-on training. Larger group numbers can also be facilitated with additional instructors.
Learners have the option to re-take the theory assessment using an alternative test paper within 7 weeks of the course end date. Additional support is provided to assist learner/s improve their chances of successfully completing the retake.
Paediatric First Aid training should be refreshed every 3 years. It is advisable to attend yearly refresher courses to keep skills updated with the latest guidelines.
No prior first aid experience is necessary as the course is designed for learners from various training levels and experiences.
Learners must provide a form of photo identification and bring a notepad and pen for taking notes. Comfortable dresscode is advisable for practical exercises.
The Equality Act 2010 requires training centres to make reasonable adjustments where a disabled person would be at a substantial disadvantage in undertaking an assessment. A request for a reasonable adjustment depends on several factors including the needs of the individual.
An adjustment may not be reasonable if it involves unreasonable costs, timeframes or the security and integrity of the course. There is no requirement to adjust the assessment criteria being tested and adjustments should be in line with the purpose of the course.
Reasonable adjustments should be applied before a learner is assessed, therefore customers must ensure they identify any reasonable adjustment requirements in time for such adjustments to be made safely.
Any prior knowledge, skills, understanding or qualifications that are required to undertake this course are outlined below:
• Learners should be a minimum of 14 years to undertake this qualification
• Learners between 14-16 years can undertake the qualification, however, they should not be relied upon by employers to be the sole emergency first aider.
• Learners must have sufficient command of the English language to understand and undertake the recommended assessment methods for this course.
• Learners must demonstrate first aid procedures as part of their assessment, including providing CPR to a casualty on the floor. Therefore, learners must be physically capable of performing CPR on the floor.
