Level 3 First Aid at Work FAQs

The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is a one-day qualification covering essential life-saving skills, such as CPR, treating minor injuries and managing an unconscious casualty. It’s designed for low-risk workplaces, like offices or retail.

This Level 3 First Aid at Work course is a three-day qualification that provides a more in-depth level of training for higher-risk environments. As well as the skills taught in EFAW, it covers serious medical conditions, such as injuries to bones, joints and the spine, as well as managing burns, poisoning and anaphylaxis. In short, it provides more comprehensive training for higher-risk workplaces.

For more information on the differences between the 1-day and 3-day first aid courses, read our in-depth guide to the differences

The First Aid at Work course is 3 days in duration, a total of 18 contact hours (6 hours per day) of teaching time minimum, plus additional time for breaks and lunch. A day could typically start at 9 am and finish at 4 pm. The start times are flexible to meet your operational needs.

The Level 3 First Aid at Work course is designed specifically for medium- to high-risk workplaces. It’s ideal for industries such as construction, manufacturing, warehousing and engineering, where employees face a higher risk of injury. The training offered in this course is designed to ensure that first aiders are capable of treating a wide range of workplace incidents, from life-threatening conditions to complex injuries.

Yes. If you decide to book the Level 3 First Aid at Work course with First Aid Safety, then it’s simple to add further modules to your training. That way, you can tailor the content to the risks present in your workplace. Popular modules include catastrophic bleeding control and AED defibrillator training. By adding extra modules to your training, you ensure that your workplace is aware of the risks present in your environment and capable of responding to the worst-case scenario.

If a learner doesn’t pass the Level 3 First Aid at Work course the first time, they’ll always have the option to resit. Our trainers are committed to helping every learner succeed, ensuring they gain the knowledge and confidence required to become a qualified first aider. In practical terms, that means they’ll receive support and guidance before being offered the chance to re-sit the assessment.

The Level 3 First Aid at Work Course is fully HSE compliant, meeting all the requirements of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. In practice, this means that by booking this course, you can demonstrate compliance with regulations requiring employers to provide appropriate first aid provision. Successful learners will receive a nationally recognised qualification that’s regulated by Ofqual

The Level 3 First Aid at Work training is valid for three years. To maintain the qualification, first aiders should complete a requalification course, such as our Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work Refresher course, before their certificate expires. The HSE also strongly recommends that first aiders complete an annual refresher course to keep their skills up to date.

No prior first aid experience is necessary as the course is designed for learners from various training levels and experiences, including those with no previous first aid knowledge. The course will provide you with everything you need to confidently respond to first aid emergencies, including practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

Absolutely. The Level 3 First Aid at Work course can be adapted to meet the specific needs of your organisation, which is when the training works best. Our in-house approach allows us to incorporate specific workplace risks, scenarios and examples, ensuring the content delivered is directly relevant to your team’s environment. There’s also the option to add bolt-on modules, such as AED training, which can also be included. This approach ensures your employees receive the right training for the risks in their workplace.

Proof of photo identification is required to attend all regulated courses. Otherwise, there’s no specialist equipment that you need to provide - everything that’s required will be facilitated by our instructors. Learners are advised to wear comfortable clothing suitable for practical exercises and bring a notepad and pen for taking notes.

The Equality Act 2010 requires training centres to make reasonable adjustments where a disabled person would be at a substantial disadvantage in undertaking an assessment. A request for a reasonable adjustment depends on several factors, including the needs of the individual. Reasonable adjustments should be applied before a learner is assessed. Accordingly, we ask that customers identify any reasonable adjustments in time for such adjustments to be made safely.

Learners must be at least 14 years old* to enrol on the Level 3 First Aid at Work course. An understanding of English is also required to undertake the training and complete the multiple-choice assessments. Learners must demonstrate first aid procedures as part of their assessment, including providing CPR to a casualty on the floor. Where learners are unable to perform practical tasks such as this, they may choose to take the QNUK Level 2 Award in Essential First Aid (RQF) course as an alternative.

*Please note that while learners aged 14-16 are allowed to complete the qualification, they shouldn’t be relied on by employers as the sole emergency first aider in the workplace.
